Summary: | Leptin is a peptide hormone that has an important role in the regulation of body weight by inhibiting food intake and stimulating energy expenditure. [...]leptin exhibits a variety of other effects, including the regulation of endocrine function, reproduction, and immunity. 1, 2 Consistently, leptin deficient (ob/ob) mice and leptin receptor deficient (db/db) mice are not only severely obese but also display hormonal imbalances, abnormalities in thermoregulation, infertility, and evidence of immune and haematopoietic defects. Despite the presence of methodological problems in their study, this point is of interest because experimental models suggest that leptin may influence the disease process in two opposing ways, either by enhancing the expression of Th1 cytokines or by limiting the inflammatory responses. [...]longitudinal studies including patients with early RA are still needed to clarify the potential influence of leptin on disease outcome, and particularly the progression of joint damage. |
