Summary: | In the amphibian Pleurodeles waltlii , hemoglobin undergoes an ontogenic switch from larval to adult forms. This switch is inducible by thyroid hormones and represents an attractive system to study the regulation of the sequential activation of the globin genes during erythroid differentiation. The authors have previously constructed a library of erythrocyte cDNAs from larvae of Pleurodeles waltlii at a stage where larval and adult globin genes are expressed simultaneously. The clones corresponding to larval or adult genes were separated by differential screening and identified by hybridization selection and in vitro translation of the selected mRNAs. They report here the sequence of an alpha -globin cDNA found only at early stages of development. |
