Summary:"The goal of the program is to pro- tect any individual or family whose drug costs are consuming an un- reasonable share of their income, be it from a combined cost of using drugs for several common diseases, or one extremely high-cost drug for a less common or rare disease," said Pre- mier Robert Ghiz at the May 10th event announcing the program. "Peo- ple shouldn't have to choose between buying groceries or getting their pre- scription filled. Placing a cap on out- of-pocket prescription drug costs will ensure every Islander has access to the medications they require." Lori Barker, the executive director of the Canadian Can- cer Society in PEI said she was "absolutely surprised and thrilled," by the announce- ment. "It's been a long time coming and the government has had the benefit of learning from experiences in other provinces. This plan means the support will be there rela- tive to household income."
