Description
Summary:This study aimed to gain insight into how quality of care in nursing homes (QoC-NHs) should be measured from an individual perspective. A cross-sectional qualitative study consisting of two focus groups and a group exercise with policy makers, (in)formal caregivers and client representatives was performed. Four topics of QoC-NHs were addressed: expectations; experiences; operationalization of measuring; and, who to involve in the measurement. Participants discussed that the content of the measurement should focus on knowing the resident, and what his or her wishes, needs and expectations are. Regarding the operationalization, continuous and meaningful conversations were mentioned. Because residents cannot always express themselves, information should be gathered from multiple perspectives, including the resident, informal, and formal caregivers. In conclusion, whilst quantitative key performance indicators of QoC remain important, an additional focus should be on experienced QoC derived from multiple perspectives in which the care relationship plays an important role.
