Summary: | This paper details the engagement of undergraduate students at Western Oregon University in research led by gerontology faculty. First, data collected from 53 gerontology alums using an online survey will be presented to demonstrate real and perceived benefits of co-research opportunities among those graduating from our program. Next, this paper describes a study involving students as co-researchers in examining the unique partnership between our university and the local senior community center. Students helped collect and analyze survey data from 46 members of the senior center, as well as interview data from 15 individuals, about this partnership. Findings reinforced ideas about benefits generated through intergenerational contact between students and older adults and provided new ideas for these types of opportunities. The study also informed how these types of research opportunities allow students to learn about issues for older adults through face-to-face interviews and qualitative data analysis. |
