Summary: | Are older migrants from India and China to the UK ageing better than their peers in the host community or country of origin? We examine 3 dimensions of wellbeing: quality of life, loneliness and self-rated health using data from a survey of older people from minority communities and using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Indian and Chinese Longitudinal Studies of Ageing for comparison. Our sample of Indian (N=164) and Chinese (N=117) migrants did not present a consistent pattern in levels of wellbeing compared with their peers in their country of origin or majority community. Indian migrants reported loneliness prevalence of 10% in all 3 groups; life satisfaction and health rating were comparable with the majority community but higher than country of origin. Chinese migrants reported higher levels of loneliness and lower levels of self-rated health than their peers in either comparator group. |
