Summary: | Maes et al provide a critical reflection on intensive pork production. Although some outdoor systems may also adopt intensive management practices, the term intensive production in the present paper refers to systems where the pigs are housed in confinement indoors. Emphasis is placed on animal health and welfare. So far, the focus in the literature has been directed toward animal welfare, without considering the health aspects. Where appropriate and data are available, comparisons are made with (semi-) extensive systems. |
