description The awareness of citizens concerning the health risks caused by environmental pollution is growing, but studies on determinants of pro-environmental behaviors have rarely examined health-related aspects. In this study, we investigated these determinants using data from a large survey among Italian university students (15 Universities: 4778 filled questionnaires). Besides the health-related aspects, represented by environmental health risk perception and functional health literacy, we considered social and demographic characteristics (gender, area of residence, sources of information, trust in institutional and non-institutional subjects, and students' capacity of positive actions, indicated as internal locus of control). The attitudes towards pro-environmental behaviors were positive for more than 70% of students and positively related with health risk perception, internal locus of control, and health literacy. The correspondence between the positive attitudes towards pro-environmental behaviors and the real adoption of such behaviors was approximately 20% for most behaviors, except for the separate collection of waste (60%). Such a discrepancy can be attributable to external obstacles (i.e., lack of time, costs, lack of support). The health-related aspects were linked to the pro-environmental attitudes, but to a lesser extent to pro-environmental behaviors, owing to the complexity of their determinants. However, they should be taken in account in planning education interventions.

<cop>Switzerland</cop><pub>MDPI AG</pub><pmid>33806848</pmid><doi>10.3390/ijerph18063306</doi><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4518-1653</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3170-1857</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2958-5458</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7596-2464</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5122-7967</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3009-9147</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8349-2466</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0297-9502</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4901-2067</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1131-4286</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6448-8960</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8588-0347</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8507-900X</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5171-4308</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7726-9329</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2782-2798</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3890-8546</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4078-5108</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5542-5119</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0131-053X</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9089-0817</orcidid><orcidid>https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0551-2473</orcidid><oa>free_for_read</oa></addata></record>
