Summary:This article presents a commentary on the current status of offender rehabilitation in Australian prisons. Prompted by recent debates concerning the value of rehabilitation programs in reducing rates of re-imprisonment, it considers the current evidence to support the effectiveness of Australian correctional programs highlighting the importance of the prison social climate, the intensity and quality of treatment and the need for psychological treatment to be integrated within broader models of rehabilitation and reintegration.
