Description
Summary:Purpose Worsening quality of life (QOL) is an important health issue in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) survivors. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of worsening QOL among ARDS survivors and their association with mortality. Methods South Korean National Health Insurance database information for all adults admitted to intensive care units for ARDS from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018 who survived ≥ 365 days were included in this study. Results A total of 4452 ARDS survivors were included in the final analysis. Total QOL had worsened in 1667 (37.4%) of the survivors at the follow-up 1 year after being diagnosed with the syndrome. Specifically, 1298 patients (29.2%) experienced decreased income, 334 (7.5%) lost their jobs, and 327 (7.3%) had newly acquired disabilities. In the multivariable Cox regression analysis, worsening QOL was not associated with 2-year all-cause mortality among survivors ( P  = 0.140). However, newly acquired disability was associated with 1.74-fold (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.31–2.33; P
