When smooth muscle cells come into contact they interact with each other so as to form a tissue. In this sense, a community of smooth muscle cells is analogous with the liver, epithelial tissues and the heart. One can contrast this ‘collective’ behaviour of smooth muscle cells with the separate identity maintained by most nerve cells and skeletal muscle fibres. |
