Summary:We describe a solid-acid-catalyzed conversion of hemicellulose (a component of lignocellulosic material) into xylose, arabinose and furfural in aqueous media. Conversion of hemicellulose using solid acid catalysts was carried out in water. Using HUSY zeolite (Si/Al = 15), a yield of 41% xylose + arabinose and 12% furfural was observed, and, upon recycling, the catalyst showed similar activity for up to 5 runs.
