Summary:The reaction between sterically demanding m -terphenyl lithiate complexes and cadmium dihalides yields unusual cubanes where changes in ligand bulk afford different formulations, in particular a rare heterodicubane structure. Reactions between [2,6-Ar 2 C 6 H 3 Li] 2 and CdX 2 yield the first structurally authenticated heterocubanes with two or three Cd 2+ ions and a heterodicubane.
