Description
Summary:The pyridine-rich complex [Ni II (L N 2 Py 3 )(MeCN)](ClO 4 ) 2 ( 1 ) acts as an efficient electro- and photocatalyst in the generation of H 2 from water. Observed TONs reach 1050 for electrocatalysis and a remarkable 3500 for photocatalysis. Experimental and DFT data support the ligand-reduced [Ni I L&z.rad;] as the catalytically active species, contrasting with the [Co I L] observed for cobalt catalysts. A nickel-based electro/photocatalyst acts efficiently toward water reduction with a remarkable TON of 3500. Involvement of the ligand-reduced [Ni I L&z.rad;] species is proposed.
