Description
Summary:Traditionally incandescent light bulbs are being used for two-wheeler lighting. These incandescent bulbs consume a lot of electrical power and most of the energy is wasted as heat. Hence, there is a need for an alternate technology, where there is a reduction in electrical energy consumed. LEDs convert electricity into light more efficiently than the inc andescent bulbs. The use of LED in motor vehicles reduces the amount of electrical power required by the vehicle. This allows the use of small alternators or batteries. The estimated power saving done by replacing dash board lighting turn signal assemblies and tail lamp assemblies by LED's will be around 60%. Small size of LED allows considerable design flexibility. LED assemblies are expected to last the life of the vehicle. This paper discusses the performance, efficiency and reliability of both incandescent bulbs and LEDs, and substantiates the use of LEDs as an alternate solution for two-wheeler lighting.
