Summary: | In this work, the effects of the use of biodiesel from soy and castor oils (pure and blended with mineral diesel oil) on the atomization quality of the fuel in the combustion chamber of diesel engines with common-rail injection systems were investigated.
The equations used in the calculation of parameters that describe the external characteristics of the spray generated are those employed in the injection systems design.
The models that simulate the behavior of the spray are a function of the operational conditions of the engine, such as pressure in the combustion chamber and pressure drop on the injector.
It was observed that there was a tendency towards reduced atomization quality as the biodiesel content in the diesel/biodeisel mixtures was raised. This reduction in atomization quality is expressed by an increase in the average diameter of the droplets, a reduction in penetration of the jet and an increase in breakup time. These effects were more pronounced for the samples of biodiesel from castor oil than for biodiesel from soy oil. |
