The Mechanics of Looped-Pile Carpets: Part I: Deformation1
The idealized geometry of a looped-pile carpet is analyzed. Mechanisms of deformation are outlined, and the limiting conditions for each mechanism are discussed. Expressions are derived for both the initial and final geometries of the loop. Strain levels in the fibers in a deformed carpet are predic...

Summary: | The idealized geometry of a looped-pile carpet is analyzed. Mechanisms of deformation are outlined, and the limiting conditions for each mechanism are discussed. Expressions are derived for both the initial and final geometries of the loop. Strain levels in the fibers in a deformed carpet are predicted, and the results are presented in dimensionless parameters which can be easily converted into usual textile terms.
Attention is given to the practical implications of this mathematical approach to carpet design. |
