Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of snakebites in men reported in the state of Rio de janeiro - Brazil, correlating the incidence of cases in the country with the number of cases treated by the Intoxication Control Center (InCC) a public hospital located in the city of Niterói. Information was analyzed for the period 2006 to 2009 provided by the database of the National Toxic Pharmacology System (SINITOX) and InCC. The data showed 220 reported cases, with a predominance in the hot and rainy months from January to March, in urban areas (53.1%), predominantly in people aged between 20-49 years (51.73%), and affecting a greater number of males (72.27%). The most prevalent snakes were of the genus Bothrops (70.91%), mostly occurring in the municipality of Niterói (24.09%). In this context, it is necessary to develop effective and efficient activities in order to disseminate the risks and complications related to snakebites, as well as to develop a protocol for nursing care in an emergency, in order to minimize related problems.
