Summary:This work demonstrates a numerical approach to design drive conditions for isentropic compression experiments using the ‘bed of nails’ (BON) technique. The approach features a genetic algorithm to evaluate the nail shape within a BON. Three cases are investigated where a linearly increasing drive duration of 1.0 μs to peak stresses of 4.3, 7.8, and 11.7 GPa are specified. Techniques used in this work are effective at generating a desired drive condition with a nominally uniform stress front. Dimensions for each BON impactor is provided for future experimental validation.
