Summary: | Recent experimental and theoretical studies of normal and transverse ionizing shocks are summarized. Results of normal ionizing shock studies are reviewed briefly. Transverse ionizing shocks have been observed traveling with speeds and drive currents that are in excellent agreement with a snowplow‐type theory. It is noted that small bias fields cause significant shunting of the total discharge current at the launch end of the shock tube while large bias fields inhibit shunting and thereby enhance shock‐tube performance. Evidence is presented supporting the hypothesis that this effect is caused by sputtering of heavy‐metal vapors from the launch area of the shock tube. |
