Summary: | This article reviews research done by the author and collaborators in the general area of subtraction techniques applied to radiological images, in particular in contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM). Main achievements have been the development and phantom validation of a general formalism to subtract images using dual-energy or temporal modalities, the proposal of a hybrid modality called dual-energy temporal, and of a matrix-based compensation for the energy dependence of the anatomical background for dual-energy subtraction. This has been validated with non-homogenous phantom measurements and applied to clinical images using iodine-based contrast medium. Results from the clinical study have led the group to study the correlation between CEDM image parameters and angiogenic biomarkers in a murine breast cancer model. Clinical CEDM subtracted images have been subjected to textural analysis. |
