Description
Summary:This study was conducted to explore the possibility of utilization of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag produced in Bangladesh as fine aggregate in concrete blocks. Arc Furnace slag was collected from a steel plant in Chittagong. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to investigate the chemical composition and to identify the phases present in the sample. A constant W/C ratio of 0.45 and a volumetric ratio of cement: sand: aggregate = 1.0:1.5:3.0 was maintained during the preparation of concrete specimens. The concrete samples, made by incorporating 0%, 25% 50%, 75%, and 100% slag aggregate, were cured under water and tested at 7, 14 and 28 days for compressive strength and splitting tensile strength. Compressive strength in the range 2800-5320 psi and the splitting tensile strength in the range 320-440 psi could be obtained which indicate a reasonable possibility of the reuse of EAF slag in construction materials.
