Summary: | This paper reports on the thermoelectric power and its dependence on aging time, were observed experimentally on the nickel-based super alloy Inconel 600. This type of alloy can be solution strengthened and is mostly used in the nuclear industry. The alloy has an austenitic microstructure and if exposed to high temperatures, it could precipitate carbides along grain boundaries. Nine samples were aged at temperature of 700 °C for times up to 2000 h. The effects of aging time were followed by performing Vickers microhardness and TEP measurements on unaged and aged samples respectively. The experimental results show that TEP and microhardness measurements exhibit similar behavior with the maximum values of TEP and hardness occurring at 100 h, therefore, the correlation between TEP and Vickers microhardness indicates that the TEP coefficient may be used as a NDE method due to its sensitivity to the gradual microstructural changes undergone by the IN600 during thermal aging. |
