Summary: | A derivation is presented of a new expression for the slowly varying (dc) magnetic field generated by the absorption of laser light. Good agreement is found between results calculated from the new expression and results from simulation calculations and experiments. When applied to the resonant absorption of high powered laser light, it is shown that mega‐Gauss dc magnetic fields can extend well into the overdense region for high enough resistivity. Therefore, they can inhibit the laser heated electron thermal conductivity. |
