Summary: | The production of rice husk in East Kalimantan reached 80,020.4 tons/year. Despite their vast production, rice husk is considered undesirable because has less economic value. The use of rice husk is still limited for kitchen utensils, animal feed, etc. Besides improving its economic and usage values, processing rice husk into activated carbon becomes alternative way of utilization of abundant amount of rice husk. This study aims to determine the effect of micro-wave power on the characteristics of activated carbon produced from rice husk. Activated rice husk-based activated carbon is synthesized using a microwave-assisted chemical activation method. Rice husk which has been prepared -100+120 mesh is carbonized at 500°C for 2 h. Chemical activation was carried out using 10% concentration of Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) for 20 h. Micro wave irradiation is carried out at 180, 378, 468, 657, 792 and 900 watt of output power for 20 minutes. Furthermore, proximate analysis and iodine adsorption number analysis were used to investigate the characteristics of activated carbon produced such as moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon and iodine adsorption number. The quality requirements for activated carbon refers to Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-1995). The best results were obtained at 792 watt of output power with the characteristics of activated carbon; moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon and iodine absorption number respectively as follows 12.15%, 9.44%, 7.82%, 70.59% and 468.16 mg/g. Activated carbon is a well known material that is used extensively in industrial purification and chemical recovery operations. It the mostly widely used adsorbents and it offers an attractive and inexpensive option for removal of several solutes from aqueous solutions |
