Summary:The Al5083-2 wt.% SiO2 composite was fabricated using stir casting method. The properties of the composite and its aging behavior were systematically studied. The Al5083-2 wt.% SiO2 composite ingots were aged at 160, 190 and 210 °C up to 23 hrs. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the ingot and aged specimens were characterized using Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and hardness tester. The results revealed that a new compound was formed during casting process. However, an unreacted SiO2 particle was also observed. Hardness of specimen increased with a decreasing aging temperature. The enhanced hardness caused by the present of the Mg2Si precipitate.
