Summary:Since its development in 1891 Biginelli’s three component synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones/ thiones, it is always on highlight of synthetic organic chemist. A variety of catalysts such as Lewis acid, organocatalyst, Brønsted acid catalyst, ionic liquid catalyst, microwave irradiation methods, ultrasound irradiation methods, grinding and solvent-free methods etc. has been introduced for the one pot synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones/thiones. This short review describes the recent development on the synthesis of this important moiety.
