Summary: | The implementation of speed limits to make roads, roadsides, and road-related areas safer for all road users. One of the areas with high potential to traffic accidents is residential areas which are located on the right or left side of the arterial or collector roads. Travel speed is a contributing factor in all crashes. Reductions in average travel speed across the network is the most effective and swift way to reduce road trauma and would produce significant and immediate road safety benefits. To achieve road safety targets, speed limits need to be set and enforced. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of maximum speed limit using the stopping sight distance and risk of fatality. The study locations are in three collector roads in Purbalingga Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Based on the analysis result, the maximum speed limit based on the stopping sight distance method is 39.29 km/h for Padamara Street, 38.39 km/h for Letkol Isdiman Street and 38.09 km/h for Letnan Yusuf Street. Based on the curve of the relationship between vehicle speed and accident fatality rates issued by the Department of Planning, Transport, and Infrastructure of South Australia, the speed limit value is 42 km/h. The maximum speed limit of the vehicles proposed for the collector roads with residential area functions is 40 km/h. The future research is focused on determining the maximum speed limit value based on vehicle type and land use. Maximum speed limit values are differentiated for 2-wheeled vehicles and 4-wheeled vehicles or more. |
