Description
Summary:This paper presents an experimental study of rooftop rainwater energy harvesting. The runoff water from rooftop rain gutters is used to spin a hydro turbine inside a cylindrical housing in order to help the permanent magnet generator to generate power on a small scale. The electricity produced by the generator is used to charge 12-volt batteries. The experiment investigates the affect of three main components: generator's torque rates, positions of the hydro turbine, and existence of a rainwater buffer. The position of hydro turbine is compared in two different positions, high position and low position from ground. A ball valve is used as passive rainwater buffer to compare the water flow in the pipe when the rainfall rainwater buffer is present or absent. Two permanent magnet generators with different torque rates are used as generators, and the voltage generated by each generator is compared. The experiment results found that rates of torque give more significant impact on the value of initial and final voltage output of the micro hydro system.
