Description
Summary:The aim of this research is to study on epoxidation of waste cooking oil by application of in situ peracid mechanism. The epoxidation process was carried out by implementing in situ generated performic acid by using sulfuric acid as homogenous catalyst in order to produce epoxidized waste cooking oil. The reaction that occurred between formic acid and hydrogen peroxide will then produce performic acid. Formic acid was classified as oxygen carrier whereas hydrogen peroxide acts as oxygen donor. The main target of this work is to synthesis a high yield of epoxidized waste cooking oil and to investigates the influence of temperatures in term of relative conversion to oxirane (RCO). FTIR spectroscopy was used to proof the presence of oxirane ring in the epoxidized waste cooking oil. The FTIR findings shows that the oxirane ring was found at wavenumber 750-880 cm-1. The outcomes from this research showed that the highest percentage of RCO was 85% at the temperature of 55°C.
