The effect of nose surgery on the functionality of the nose and middle ear in Minangkabau ethnic

Chronic nasal obstruction, one of which is caused by a deviated septum can cause an obstruction that will affect the function of the Eustachian tube, which connects the nasal cavity and the middle ear. This triggers complaints of nasal congestion, ear fullness, affects middle ear ventilation and has an impact on hearing. The main role of the Eustachian tube is in ventilation of the middle ear to maintain the balance of air pressure in the middle ear. Eustachian tube dysfunction occurs due to obstruction of the fallopian tubes in patients with the deviated nasal septum, which is caused by nasal inflammation and increased secretions from the nasal glands that accumulate and block the tubes. This situation can reduce ventilation which triggers negative middle ear pressure and can interfere with hearing. Based on history, the word ethnicity comes from the Greek language, namely "heathen" which is a multi-aspected concept that includes kinship, religion, language, territorial area and citizenship as well as physical appearance. Minangkabau ethnicity is one of the major ethnic groups that ranks 7th out of all ethnic groups in Indonesia. Ethnic-based research is important for the future, as the basis for determining strategies for prevention, early detection and therapy. There are still some conflicting research results whether rhinoplasty in the form of septoplasty, rhinoplasty and or septorhinoplasty can improve ear pressure, the function of the Eustachian tube and the physiological function of the nose or not. This research is analytical research. The population and sample are a group of Minangkabau ethnic people who live in Padang and meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Functional examination of the nose with PNIF and saccharin test and ear function with tympanometry and OAE tests were performed.
