Summary:The author analyzed the problems of managing the visual qualities of lighting in public spaces. It is concluded that it is necessary to introduce emotional-aesthetic and figurative-artistic levels of perception of the architectural environment into the methods of assessing the illumination of public spaces. Violation of the visual comfort of these levels negatively affects human health. The compilation of norms for the quantitative assessment of these levels will make it possible to create a toolkit for the analysis and control of the quality of illumination of the urban environment. The development of norms and regulations for the illumination of public spaces can have a noticeably beneficial effect on the economic and medical components of the life of settlements.
