Summary: | Presbytis fredericae is a leaf eating monkey species found in the central part of Java Island. The current distribution of this colobine primate needs to be revisited to confirm its distribution and rarity for ascertaining its conservation status. This paper aims to map the current distribution of the Javan Fuscous Langur and discuss the possibility of its existence when the forest habitat is continuously degraded. To ascertain the distribution of the langur, we began with surveys of several sites reported by Nijman (1997). We also conducted field observation on some other sites based on information from local people. Despite observing the primary data, we also checked some publications and performed interviews to gain information about the presence of the langur. Since the discussion is focused on habitat and conservation, this paper presents the results of the surveys along with some properties of the habitat. The results of this research indicate that P. fredericae is distributed on four volcanic mountain complexes, i. e. Mt Slamet, Mts. Dieng, Mt. Merbabu and Mt. Prau. The langur occupies the dense forest habitat and is frequently associated with the sloping land. Forest degradation has been well known as the leading cause affecting the langur population. Since anthropogenic disturbances are less in the sloping land of higher elevation forest, the altitudinal distribution showed by the langur possibly corresponds to this phenomenon. |
