Description
Summary:Nuclear reactor operation produces spent nuclear fuel and shall be appropriately managed. The policy for managing nuclear-spent fuel in Indonesia follows an open cycle of nuclear material. Nuclear spent fuel is classified as high-level radioactive waste prohibited from reprocessing but shall be disposed of or returned to the country of origin. In decommissioning the TRIGA 2000 reactor in Bandung, the question arises of how to manage the nuclear-spent fuel from the decommissioned reactor. This study is needed to prepare any options that the applicable laws and regulations can carry out. Several aspects that are considered in eachoption are presented in this paper, including technical aspects, safety, security, and safeguards. This study resulted in many options that can be selected that are: (1) nuclear-spent fuel is transported and stored to the TC-ISSF (wet type)using a transport cask, (2) transported and stored using a dual-purpose cask (dry type), (3) repatriated to the country of origin. Each option also discussed what requirements are prepared and fulfilled according to regulations and technical requirements. This study is helpful for policymakers to determine the choice of nuclear-spent fuel management from the decommissioning activities of the TRIGA 2000 reactor in Bandung.
