Summary:Since 2019 Covid has caused havoc worldwide. The disease which is caused by coronavirus has resulted in many fatalities and infected millions of people. When it was reported first, very less information was available about it and nobody was sure about how to treat the infection. Many medicines both traditional and chemotherapeutic were utilised for its treatment with mixed results depending on number of factors. Once the genome identification was done the process of vaccine formulation got speed up and some vaccines were formulated which provided some relief. But meanwhile different symptoms were reported from various patients and when studied in detail it was noticed that the virus is capable of undergoing repeated mutations and generating new strains with different infective and resistance characteristics. The process of mutation was occurring in all over the world with different country reporting different variants. The present article reviews the evolution of different variants of coronavirus and their relation with the spread of pandemic.
