Summary: | Samples of submerged macrophytes and their associated epiphytic algae were taken from wave exposure gradients in 3 eutrophic Swedish lakes. Submerged macrophyte biomass increased with wave exposure and then abruptly disappeared at high exposure. Associated epiphytic algae decreased with wave exposure. The production of epiphytic algae was also examined on artificial substrates at a sheltered and an exposed site in each lake during the period June-September 1993 and was observed to be higher at the sheltered sites. Epiphytic algae was an important factor in limiting submerged macrophyte distribution in sheltered locations in eutrophic lakes. |
