Effects of fenvalerate on the net-spinning behaviour of Hydropsyche siltalai (Döhler) (Trichoptera : Hydropsychidae)

Summary: | The effects of exposure to the commonly used insecticide fenvalerate on net-spinning behavior of larval Hydropsyche siltalai was studied in the laboratory. Following two repetitions of four days of exposure to nominal pulse doses of 0.25 and 0.5 mu g fenvalerate/l, nets were collected and examined. Hydropsyche exposed to the higher dose showed significantly affected net-spinning behavior, expressed as increased mesh opening and decreased symmetry. No significant effects were detected at the lower exposure level. The utility of net anomalies and Hydropsyche as bioindicators of stream pollutants is discussed. |
