Summary: | Despite a Surgeon General's report advising Americans to increase their consumption of dietary fiber, many population groups still know very little about fiber and its effects on health, and dietary fiber intakes are far below recommended amounts. Advantages to a high-fiber diet, awareness of the benefits of increased fiber consumption and the importance of fruit are discussed. Types of carbohydrates and dietary fibers, new standardized nutrition labels and measuring the fiber content in foods are highlighted. |
