Summary:This article analyzes the limits of Pronaf Jovem in the social construction of a successor rural youth in family farming from counterpoints between normative principles and experiences lived by young rural people. The research data were obtained by combining documentary research and case study. The case study was carried out in municipalities of the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul, it was produced qualitative and quantitative data. Pronaf Jovem idealizes the construction of an autonomous, pluriactive rural youth, integrated in institutions of rural development and successor in family farming. In this study, rural youth could not access rural credit through Pronaf Jovem. They invest in differentiated strategies for personal emancipation, which are rarely directed towards projects of hereditary succession in family farming.
