Summary: | Poliomyelitis vaccine contains antibiotics, but the antibiotics are inadequate for preventing the growth of heavy contamination with bacteria or light contamination with fungi. The addition of 0.375 per cent v/v of 2-phenoxyethanol to poliomyelitis vaccine furnished a stable mixture of preservatives (streptomycin, neomycin, and 2-phenoxyethanol) which was inhibitory to both bacteria and fungi. This mixture was also effective when poliomyelitis vaccine was mixed with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine. |
