Summary: | IntroductionAtrial fibrillation (AF) patients often have impaired quality of life (QoL). Understanding the factors associated with changes in QoL over time may help clinicians identify and tailor therapies to improve it. We sought to identify factors associated with changes in QoL among AF patients in a prospective observational registry.MethodsThe Stroke Prevention and Rhythm INTerventions in Atrial Fibrillation (SPRINT-AF) registry prospectively enrolled 2,498 patients with non-valvular AF from 132 practices in Canada (11/2013- 3/2016). Using a disease-specific questionnaire, the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality of Life (AFEQT), we assessed QoL at baseline and at 1-year. The AFEQT score ranged from 0 (worst QoL) to 100 (best QoL). Using multivariable linear regression, we examined factors associated with changes in AF-related QoL over 1-year, as reflected by changes in AFEQT scores.ResultsBaseline and 1-year AFEQT scores were available for 1,685 (68%) patients. On multivariable analysis, female sex was associated with a decrease in AFEQT scores over 1 year (3.1 point decrease, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.93 to -5.22 points, P=0.005). A lower baseline AFEQT score, indicating poorer AF-related QoL, was associated with greater improvement in AFEQT scores over 1 year (0.62 point increase for each 1-point decrement of the baseline AFEQT score, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.66 point, P |
