Summary: | IntroductionFollowing acute myocardial infarction (MI), the left ventricle undergoes molecular, cellular and extracellular matrix (ECM) changes that alter its geometry and physiology. ECM is a dynamic structure with a potential role in cardiac remodeling after MI. Collagens are the major components of cardiac and arterial ECM.HypothesisWe hypothesized that the local tissue turnover of the heart was sufficient to cause an elevation in circulating collagen biomarkers.MethodsHeparin plasma was collected from 60 ST-elevation MI (STEMI) and 39 non ST-elevation MI (non-STEMI) patients, at four timepoints; hospitalization (T0), 3 days after (T1) , 7-9 days after (T3) and 6 months after admission to hospital (T4). Collagen biomarkers of matrix metalloproteinase -mediated degradation of collagen type III (C3M), IV (C4M) and VI (C6M), and formation of collagen type III (PRO-C3) and VI (PRO-C6) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Differences between the four different time points were calculated using repeated measures ANOVA. Correlations to high sensitivity C-reactive protein were performed using a Spearmans correlation.ResultsMean age was 66 years, 77 % of NSTEMI and 65 % of STEMI were men. A few changes in collagen biomarkers were seen in NSTEMI patients; Here C3M increased at T2 compared to T1 and T3 (p |
