Summary: | IntroductionPericardial tamponade (PT) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The impact of autoimmune diagnosis on the outcomes of PT is not well studied. Therefore, we sought to study the trend and outcomes of PT with and without autoimmune diagnosis.MethodsUsing the National Inpatient Sampling (NIS) database from 2002 to 2014 we identified all adult patients with PT. Primary outcome was inpatient mortality while the secondary outcomes were pericardiocentesis, pericardial window, and length of stay (LOS).ResultsA total of 120,041 patients had the diagnosis of PT, out of which 5,114 (4.3%) had autoimmune disease.
