542 |f Series of newsreel films which opens with footage of crowds admiring a model of Sputnik at the USSR Industrial Exhibition in Moscow, before zooming in on photographs of Laika - the first dog in space. At a press conference, academicians explain how the canine was trained for his mission. In the next segment, leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexy I, celebrates his 80th birthday. Congratulatory visitors include Hewlett Johnson, the Dean of Canterbury. Later scenes include an MI6 helicopter lifting a record-breaking cargo and a tour of the interior on the world's largest airliner. Also featured is a new exhibition hall and a display of Soviet Art celebrating 40 years of the Soviet state. Works on display include "In the Smolnii" by Vladimir Serov and the sculpture "Stronger than Death" by Fedor Fiveisky. The final segment focuses on famed Soviet composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, and the first performance of his new symphony.
