Summary:Efficient and sustainable house building is one of the challenges ahead of humanity in the twenty-first century: to provide a home and better living standard for billions of forecasted new urban inhabitants. The combination of split-level and open-plan layout is suggested to enhance volume sensation, enable rational subdivision of living spaces and ultimately improve dwelling experience; cast-in-situ reinforced concrete is considered a universal building technique compatible with congested urban sites and capable of delivering highvalue, durable and energy efficient buildings. The problem of optimising the construction process of split-level apartment blocks that are made out of cast-in-situ reinforced concrete has been studied during this Engineering Doctorate project.
