A simple method for the preparation of hydrobromic acid

The reaction of one g.‐atom sulphur, six g.‐atoms bromine and an excess of water has been studied. The reaction takes place in at least two steps, the first being the formation of sulphur mono‐bromide, the second the reaction of this compound with bromine and water. The reaction results in the forma...

Description
Summary:The reaction of one g.‐atom sulphur, six g.‐atoms bromine and an excess of water has been studied. The reaction takes place in at least two steps, the first being the formation of sulphur mono‐bromide, the second the reaction of this compound with bromine and water. The reaction results in the formation of hydrobromic acid and sulphuric acid. Hydrobromic acid has a retarding influence on the formation of sulphur monobromide but accelerates the reaction of sulphur monobromide with bromine and water. A method for the preparation of hydrobromic acid was worked out based on these observations.
