Summary:A wetted-sphere absorber was used to measure the rate of absorption of COS into aqueous methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solutions over a range of temperatures (20–40°C) and amine concentrations (1259–2599 mol/m 3). A model based on the penetration theory was used to analyze the experimental data and to determine the kinetic rate constant for the reaction between COS and MDEA. The experimental evidence strongly suggests the following overall base catalysis reaction: ▪ with the second-order rate constant correlated by ▪ The physicochemical parameters needed for this analysis, solubility and molecular diffusivity of COS in aqueous MDEA solutions, were obtained using the analogy with N 2O. In this work it was experimentally verified that the analogy between COS and N 2O could predict the properties of COS with satisfactory accuracy. The properties of N 2O in MDEA solutions were experimentally determined using an equilibrium cell and a liquid-jet absorber.
