On the reaction of protons with methane, ammonia, water and oxygen
The reactions of protons with CH4, NH3, H2O, and O2 have been examined by the ICR trapped ion and ion ejection methods. The reaction of H+ with CH4 produces both the CH4+ ion by charge transfer and the CH3+ ion by hydride ion abstraction in the ratio 2:3, respectively. The reactions with NH3, H2O, a...

Summary: | The reactions of protons with CH4, NH3, H2O, and O2 have been examined by the ICR trapped ion and ion ejection methods. The reaction of H+ with CH4 produces both the CH4+ ion by charge transfer and the CH3+ ion by hydride ion abstraction in the ratio 2:3, respectively. The reactions with NH3, H2O, and O2 proceed exclusively by charge transfer. The rate constants for the reactions are: H+CH4, (3.8 ± 0.3) × 10−9; H+NH3, (5.2 ± 0.5) × 10−9; H+H2O, (8.2 ± 0.6) × 10−9; and H+O2, (1.17 ± 0.09) × 10−9 cm3/s. |
