Collective small-amplitude proton motions in the hydration shells of aqueous alcohol solutions

Hydrophobic hydration in aqueous solutions of ethanol, isopropanol and t-butanol is analyzed from the collective character of the OH stretching Raman spectrum. The data suggest that the network structure of water in the hydration shells is not significantly perturbed by either ethanol or isopropanol...

Description
Summary:Hydrophobic hydration in aqueous solutions of ethanol, isopropanol and t-butanol is analyzed from the collective character of the OH stretching Raman spectrum. The data suggest that the network structure of water in the hydration shells is not significantly perturbed by either ethanol or isopropanol, in contrast to t-butanol, which exhibits an enhancement of the structure similar to that previously observed in aqueous solutions of the semiclathrate, tetra- n-butylammonium hydroxide.
