Summary: | The effect of hydrostatic pressure on nickel corrosion in 0.58 M NaCl solution and in sea water at pH 8.2 and at 20°C has been investigated. By increasing the hydrostatic pressure, the corrosion rate and the susceptibility to pitting of nickel increase in NaCl solution and decrease in sea water. This has been explained by the different nature of the corrosion layers formed in these solutions, being the nickel corrosion products in NaCl mainly formed by nickel oxides and/or hydroxides and in sea water by nickel oxides and/or hydroxides and Ni-Mg carbonates. By increasing the hydrostatic pressure nickel oxides can be converted into soluble oxychlorides forming pits initiation sites, while Mg carbonates or oxycarbonates, having greater concentration in the corrosion layer, increase its covering power and resistance to pitting. |
